The EFFEREST project, presented as part of the E-VOLVE Cluster webinar, is driving innovation in the development of energy-efficient electric vehicles (EVs) by leveraging advanced data-driven methods and comfort-based HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) control. Central to the project is a user-centric approach that prioritizes individual thermal comfort and user preferences in the design and operation of vehicle systems.

From a technical standpoint, EFFEREST implements self-adapting comfort control strategies, utilizing Model Predictive Control (MPC) combined with adaptive digital twins. These twins continuously learn from real-time sensor data and qualitative user feedback through machine learning techniques, allowing the system to optimize energy usage while enhancing passenger comfort.

A key innovation of the project is the integration of thermal management across both the vehicle cabin and propulsion system. This holistic perspective enables co-design opportunities that support significant improvements in both energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

EFFEREST is a proud member of the E-VOLVE Cluster (Electric Vehicle Optimized for Life, Value and Efficiency), a collaborative virtual network of EU-funded R&D projects. The cluster promotes synergies among complementary research initiatives to achieve greater collective impact. Together, E-VOLVE projects are developing next-generation EV components and systems that address critical challenges such as fast charging, extended driving range, energy efficiency, and overall usability—meeting the evolving demands of the mobility market for both urban and intercity travel.

Looking to the future, EFFEREST aims to deliver adaptive thermal models that continuously learn from vehicle-specific and user-specific data. These models will be transferable across various cabin configurations and vehicle types, including light commercial vehicles and use cases under extreme environmental conditions.
